Carmel, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey and Pebble Beach, California

A Visitor's travel guide to Carmel, Carmel-by-the-Sea Carmel Valley, and Monterey, California. Guide to Lodging, Dining, Attractions, Recreation, Real Estate, and much more..., shopping, golf, art galleries, tennis, recreation, scuba diving, Spa services, and transportation and more...

Take a few artists and writers who survived San Francisco’s devastating 1906 earthquake; add clever property developers; move them all south to a picturesque coastal area of California, and you have the beginnings of Carmel-by-the-Sea, one of one of the most quaint, enchanting towns in America.

Ocean Avenue with its majestic views of the ocean and sunsets, is the town’s main street. Carmel residents have fought to keep "civilization" from spoiling the peaceful, pristine beauty and leisurely pace of the area’s lagoons, white beaches, sand dunes and nearby forests. No fast-food restaurants, outdoor eating, street lights or neon signs are permitted; there is no courthouse or jail; and there are even very few sidewalks. Carmel’s beauty and bohemian atmosphere is thought by many to resemble the charm of southern France.

Carmel’s Charms

Carmel-by-the-Sea is known also for its unusual array of architectural styles in residents’ homes, including cozy English-style cottages and Spanish-mission style mansions. Lush landscaping and gardens add to the beauty in residential areas. Several guided garden and architectural walking tours to learn about nature and Carmel’s history are available for visitors. Amidst the natural attractions of the area, Carmel offers a cluster of wine shops, antique shops, expensive boutiques, small elegant inns, upscale restaurants. Fresh fruits, artichokes and nuts are available year round.

Through Carmel-by-theSea

The peacefulness, beauty and simplicity of this seaside area has long beckoned writers and artists. There are more art galleries than you could see in one visit to Carmel, but you’ll want to stroll through several of the more than 70 in the area. Carmel’s annual events include a play-writing contest and a Bach Festival.

The most famous landmark is the Carmel Mission, built in 1770 by Native American laborers for the Spanish missionaries.

Mission Carmel and Pebble Beach Golf Resort

Build your own sand castle on the beach, or take a driving tour past the palatial homes of famous Pebble Beach residents. Tourists won’t want to miss the world-renowned, challenging and scenic golf courses in Pebble Beach.

Sightseeing is best along 17-Mile Drive, a toll road with spectacular views of rugged, granite rock cliffs jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, as well as cypress and pine forests. Some of the estates along 17-Mile Drive have been featured in movies of Hollywood’s golden years. At the end of the drive is Monterey, home to Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row (made famous by John Steinbeck’s novel), and the largest aquarium in the United States.

Pebble Beach Sightseeing Along 17-Mile Drive

Side trips into Carmel Valley, where the land is still owned by legendary wealthy movie stars, offers stunning views of orchards and grazing cattle-lined hills with the ocean below.

Excursions into Carmel Valley and the Big Sur Coast

Tourists with a couple of extra days won’t want to miss a side excursion from the end of Ocean Avenue in Carmel, along the Big Sur coast. The breathtaking ocean views from sheer cliffs along this stretch of California’s coast are dramatic, and most of the forested slopes are still untouched by civilization. The highlight at the end of this drive is the Hearst Castle at San Simeon.
